About hunting in Ethiopia

With its varied geography that encompasses towering mountains, vast savannahs, dense forests, and arid deserts, Ethiopia is a truly unique hunting ground that few hunters have been fortunate to explore.

Ethiopia on map

Ethiopia lies in the eastern part of Africa, a bit to the north from the equator. It borders Kenia in the south, Somalia to the east, Djibouti to the northeast, South Sudan to the northwest and Sudan to the west.

Price distribution

Ethiopia is one of the most expensive hunting destinations in Africa, which is the result of its government’s policy, which minimizes hunting quotas and charges exorbitant prices for licenses (up to 15,000 USD for the mountain nyala, payable before the hunt). As a result, outfitters can take no more than 40-45 hunters a year, that is for the whole country, and you can imagine what such an artificial shortage can do to prices.

Hunting methods

Most hunts in Ethiopia take place according to the traditional African spot-and-stalk and walk-and-stalk routines, with vehicles used to help hunters cover ground. Night hunting is not allowed, bowhunting is permitted.
