Hyena hunting in Ethiopia

Two Hyena species occur in Ethiopia, namely, the Spotted Hyena and the Striped Hyena. The Spotted Hyena is the more common species and the easier of the two to hunt. They occur across the country. Spotted Hyenas are also found in clans, dominated by a female matriarch. The Spotted Hyena's jaws are reputedly stronger than a Grizzly Bear's and can crack open a Giraffe's leg bone. Striped Hyenas live in smaller clans but hunt as individuals. The more gregarious Spotted Hyena is extremely vocal compared to the more secretive Striped Hyena. Night hunting is not permitted but bow hunting is allowed. Hyenas are classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN.
