Hippo hunting in South Africa ({{totalToursString}})

The name Hippo is translated from Greek meaning “River Horse”. This huge barrel shaped amphibious pachyderm with short stubby legs is surprisingly quick when running on land. Classified as a dangerous game species, this animal is responsible for more deaths in Africa than all the “Big 5” species combined and should always be treated with respect. They are predominantly grazers feeding at night and resting up during the day in their aquatic habitat. The majority of hippo hunts offered in South Africa take place in the Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces. If you are keen to book a Hippo hunt ensure you plan your trip well in advance. Due to controlled availability of quota, hunting opportunities are limited. A traditional hippo hunt is conducted by walking-and-stalking along the banks of rivers and dams where they are known to occur. If you are fortunate enough to find a basking bull on the shoreline this will make hunting conditions much easier as most are hunted in the water. Sexing a male Hippo in the water is very difficult and your target is much smaller when taking a headshot as opposed to a shoulder shot when on land. If shot in the water, they initially sink before rising to the surface when the gastric gases cause the animal to bloat and float to the surface and the recovery process can begin. Hippos can be extremely destructive in sugar cane fields, vegetable crops and even plantations where they may feed at night. In such cases the nature conservation authorities may issue a night hunting permit so make sure to ask the question whether you will be hunting at night. Classified as vulnerable, no CITES permits are required as yet but special licenses and night hunting permits are required to hunt at night.

Looking for best hunting trips for You...

Why do I see different types of prices?
There are two types of hunts on our platform: Package Hunts and Customizable Hunts. Package Hunts are fixed offers. Customizable Hunts usually allow you to select species and other parameters (number of hunters and guests, etc.) and then you can see the final price of your hunt.

"Package price" tag - this price tag is shown for package hunts, and it's a final price for an offer.

"Price from" tag - we show this tag for customizable hunts either when you search for particular species or when there is only one type of species in an offer. In both cases we include the minimum trophy fee available for this type of animal. It means that you see the final price of the offer, but you can also customize it (e.g. you can include a bigger trophy into your hunt).

"Daily rate fee" tag - this price does NOT include trophy fee. For example, if you are searching for a destination and we can't figure out the species you want, then we show this tag. You will need to include trophies from a hunt page.

1:1 Limpopo Dangerous Game Hunt Limpopo, South Africa

For the adventurous of heart we offer Dangerous Game hunting like the well known Dangerous Seven, Buffalo, Lion, Elephant, Rhino, Leopard, Hippo and Crocodile. These are considered to be the most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa. South Africa is the only country left in Africa where you can still do what is considered to be a "Classic Safari" - for either all of the Big Five or all of the Dangerous Seven in one Safari. We have acquired the hunting rights on several different areas, enabling us to provide each client the opportunity to hunt all the Plains Game and Dangerous Game this magnificent country has to offer. Each Privately Owned Reserve in our concession areas comes with its own individual game managing plan, thereby ensuring an abundance of trophy quality game. The main hunting area is situated in the Limpopo Province’s true African Bushveld (close to Kruger National Park) with grassy plains, an abundance of scattered trees, interspersed with different types of bush and scrub. The nature of the bush assures the hunter (and the hunted) of a fair chase. The only way your hunting trip will happen is if you make it happen. Go ahead; take the first step towards an unforgettable journey in life. Safaris with uncompromised excellence. NOTE: Prices are subject to foreign currency fluctuations between the time of the quotation and the hunting date.

Hippo Cow Hunt Package Limpopo, South Africa

HIPPO BULL PACKAGE HUNT YEAR: Available during 2021 and 2022 DURATION: 5 hunting days, 6 nights and 2 transfer days HUNTER(S): 1 Hunter x 1 PH TROPHY FEE(S): 1 x Hippo cow trophy fee included. Additional animals may be hunted as per the price list. The average shot with a rifle on Plainsgame would be about 100 yards and at the top end maybe 250 yards. If you are comfortable taking longer shots, that is OK as well, but please practice shooting from sticks and standing up, as this is the scenario most of the time. If Bow Hunting, most of blinds are set up for 20-35 yards shots. Bow Hunting can be done out of various hides on the concessions or on foot by means of walking and stalking. Most shots will be between 20-30 yards, as our bow hides are all strategically placed to ensure the highest possible success rate. Any bow set up that you use for big game hunting back home, for example deer, is sufficient for our plainsgame . We prefer someone to use a bow that they are used to and very familiar with, than go out and get themselves a heavier set up, that they are not familiar with. Success is greater if you are familiar with your bow and used to using it. Fixed blade broad heads are recommended but a well-placed mechanical broad head is also deadly. Additionally for plainsgame we recommend an arrow of at least 400 grains and up and for dangerous game an arrow of at least 750 grains is recommended with a well constructed two blade cut on contact broadhead. NOTE: Although not our intention, all prices are subject to change without notice due to foreign currency fluctuations between the time of the quotation and commencement of the hunt.
