Zebra hunting in South Africa

Zebras can be divided into two subspecies groups. Burchell’s Zebra with their easily identifiable shadow stripes are the only true plains game species in South Africa. Cape Mountain Zebra are the other indigenous subspecies found in the country along with Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra that was introduced to some areas from Namibia. Besides their mountainous habitat preference, these mountain Zebras are identified by their lack of shadow stripes, brown colouring around the muzzle and the adult stallions have a noticeable dewlap. Burchell’s Zebra are the most commonly occurring of the two subspecies and are found across the entire country. Cape Mountain Zebra distribution is limited to the Free State, Eastern and Western Cape and both Hartmann’s and Cape Zebra can be found in isolated pockets in the Northern Cape where introduced. Zebras are grazers and are extremely alert animals. They will call when becoming separated from their family group. Zebra’s patterns are like a fingerprint and each individual can be identified by their specific pattern. Burchell’s Zebra may be exported from South Africa without any restrictions. Cape Mountain Zebra and Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra require CITES import and export permits. Further restrictions may apply for some countries so make sure that you can import these Mountain Zebra into your country of residence.
