Zebra hunting in Namibia

Three species of Zebra occur in Africa of which two occur in Namibia. The Mountain Zebra genus is represented by Hartmann's Mountain Zebra scattered across the semi-arid highland areas of the country. The Plains Zebra group is represented by three subspecies, Burchell's Zebra in the south, Damara Zebra in the north and Chapman's Zebra in the Caprivi now known as the Zambezi Province. As the name suggests the most commonly hunted species are the Plains Zebra found in the savanna regions of the country. There are some slight variations in colouring. Both the Burchell's and Damara subspecies have very distinctive shadow stripes and look very similar, whilst the Chapman's Zebra have no shadow stripes and stripping is visible right down to the hooves. Hartmann's Mountain Zebra have no shadow stripes, a white belly, a small dewlap and a prominent orange-brown muzzle. Hartmann's Mountain Zebra are classified by the IUCN as a CITES II animal and these animals may not be imported into the USA. There are no trade restrictions for the importation of the Plains Zebras found in Namibia.
