Wildebeest hunting in Tanzania

The Safari Club International Record Book only recognises two Wildebeest species in Tanzania. Both animals are actually subspecies of the Blue Wildebeest group and scientific research has shown that there is also a third subspecies found in northern Tanzania. The Nyasa, Nyasaland or Johnston's Wildebeest is found over the greater central and southern portion of the country. This animal has the slatey-grey brindled markings of a Typical Blue Wildebeest but is smaller in body size with a characteristic white band across its face. The second and third subspecies are lumped together by SCI as White-bearded Wildebeest. The more dominant of the two subspecies is Mearns' or Western White Bearded Wildebeest which occurs from Western Masailand towards the Serengeti. The Eastern White Bearded Wildebeest only occurs in Masailand. They look similar to a Blue Wildebeest but as the name would imply, they have a white beard extending from the chin all the way along the throat, To hunt a Wildebeest does not require any CITES permits and they may be hunted with a 10-day Tanzanian hunting license.
