Waterbuck hunting in South Africa

Waterbuck is a thick set, mule like, cunning, shaggy coated beast with long, heavily ridged forward curving horns. It is an easily identifiable animal with its trademark white ringed rump and predominantly found in the eastern parts of the country. The best hunting area is the northern and eastern Limpopo Province. They may become aggressive when wounded so be careful. It inhabits open woodlands, grasslands, hilly country, reedbeds, and floodplains, seldom found far from water. They have a keen sense of smell and good eyesight. Waterbuck may often be smelt before being seen, as they produce an oily secretion that gives them a musky smell. Hunted mainly for their horns and only recently being accepted as a meat animal as many believe that the meat is tainted. Actually, if the waterbuck is skinned properly, ensuring the fur does not touch the meat, it is good eating. Classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN, no special hunting permits are required.
