Red Hartebeest hunting in Namibia

Red Hartebeest are known as the “Harley Davidson” of the African plains due to the shape of their horns. They are also no slouch when it comes to speed having been recorded as one of Africa’s fastest antelopes. This medium to large sized, reddish-brown coloured animal may not be at the top of everyone’s hunting bucket list but is a well-adapted arid grassland species and widely spread throughout the country, except the Caprivi. Red Hartebeest are a water independent species which also commonly occur on mountain slopes and best hunted in the eastern mountain ranges or the central and northern ranges of the south-eastern regions of the country. Red Hartebeest are inquisitive animals that like to keep a safe distance from hunters. When disturbed they usually do not run far and often stop to look back giving the hunter an opportunity to take a shot. Their meat is very underrated and for some recognised as some of the finest venison in Africa. They are classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN and besides the standard required Namibian hunting license, no special hunting permits are required.
