Red duiker hunting in Mozambique

Red Duikers are classified as a pygmy species by Safari Club International and are also known as part of the tiny ten group. They are dark red in colour and both sexes have horns hidden by a prominent crest of chestnut brown hair. Horn length should only be judged from the front to avoid accidentally shooting a female. If the horns are not clearly visible, males can be identified by their large white scrotums which can be easily seen when using a good pair of binoculars. Red Duikers are found from the east coast inland as far as the central hunting coutadas and are absent from the far western and Tete region. Red Duiker is best hunted at dawn and dusk when most active. They feed mostly on leaves, fruit, berries and flowers dropped onto the forest floor by foraging monkeys. They are typically a solitary diurnal species and difficult to see when in dark shade. They are best hunted in forest clearings or along roads and tracks where they can be called using a distress call of a small antelope or rabbit. Red Duiker is classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN and no special import or export permits are required. Red Duiker may only be hunted with a pre-purchased Mozambican hunting license.
