Oribi hunting in Central African Republic

The Oribi is a member of the dwarf antelope family. The Central African Oribi subspecies is found in the central and eastern savannah regions of the Central African Republic. They have long, lean necks, slender ears, and are ginger in colour with a white belly. They possess a distinctive black tail and are larger than a Steenbuck with which they might be confused. Only the males have spiky, slightly forward-curving horns. The Oribi is the only small, primarily grazing antelope that prefers grasslands and open woodlands, thriving on floodplains. They favour short green grass grazing areas and will seek refuge in the long grass to avoid predators. When danger approaches, they will lay flat on the ground with their ears pinned back, only jumping up at the last minute to dash away from a predator. Unfortunately, this behaviour makes them very susceptible to poaching by dogs. Oribi is classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN.
