Mountain Zebra hunting in Namibia

Three species of Zebra occur in Africa, namely the Mountain Zebra, Plains Zebra and Grevy’s or Imperial Zebra. Two species of Zebra occur in Namibia and one subspecies of Mountain Zebra and two subspecies of Plains Zebra occur in the country. Mountain Zebra are represented by Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra is endemic to the country. As the name implies these animals are found in the rugged mountainous western regions of the country. This Zebra is easily identified by its small dewlap and brown muzzle. Two subspecies of Plains Zebra can be found in the country, with the most common being Burchell’s Zebra which can be identified by a clearly marked shadow stripe. The other subspecies of Plains Zebra is the Chapman’s Zebra which has no shadow stripe and is only found in the Zambezi Province, formerly known as the Caprivi. Burchell’s and Chapman’s Zebra are listed as near threatened by the IUCN but may be hunted without any international import and export restrictions. Hartmann’s Zebra are listed as vulnerable and are a CITES II animal.
