Livingstone’S Suni hunting in South Africa

Officially, Livingstone's Suni occurs north of the Zambezi River in Mozambique into Southern Tanzania. This subspecies should actually be called the Zululand Suni. A petite antelope that belongs to the “Tiny Ten” huntable species and in South Africa only occurs in the sand forests and thick riverine vegetation of Northern Zululand in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. Due to its preferred habitat of thick undergrowth, it makes for a really tough hunt. They are mostly hunted in the Hluhluwe region of KwaZulu-Natal and due to habitat fragmentation and destruction for the planting of pineapples and commercial timber, it is becoming more and more difficult to find a hunting property. Much of its former range has also been converted into photographic safari reserves that do not permit any form of hunting. Suni is best hunted using a calling device or sitting patiently over a dung midden. If you intend to hunt a Suni, make sure you book early to avoid disappointment. Classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN. However, a Threatened or Protected Species (TOPS) permit must be arranged with the South African Provincial Nature Conservation authority through your Outfitter.
