Jackal hunting in Botswana {{ totalToursString }}
Two species of Jackals are found in Botswana: the Side-striped Jackal and the Black-backed Jackal, with the latter being more easily recognisable.
On the African continent, there are eight recognized subspecies of Side-striped Jackals, but only one is present in the far northern regions of Botswana. The Southern Side-striped Jackal is smaller than a coyote and has a similar greyish-brown colouration and is found country-wide. It features a white or sometimes dark stripe running along its flank.
The Southern Black-backed Jackal is distinguished by its prominent black saddle and reddish-orange legs, with a white belly and throat. These jackals typically live in pairs and fiercely defend their territory from intruders. In areas with small livestock farming, they can pose a problem by preying on newly born calves and lambs.
Jackals are classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN and no special permits are required to hunt this species.
