About hunting in Ontario
Ontario, located in east-central Canada, is home to nearly 40 percent of the country’s population as well as its largest city, Toronto. But Ontario is a huge province with plenty of room for hunters to roam its woods and fields in search of thriving populations of deer and black bears, as well as moose and elk.
Black bears are one of Ontario’s major attractions for nonresident hunters. Bears can be hunted in both spring and fall in most management units, and are usually hunted over bait. The spring bear hunt was closed for a number of years but was recently reopened to help control the large numbers of bears.
Ontario also has excellent deer hunting, with an estimated 400,000 white-tailed deer in the province. Good deer hunting can be found in most regions of the province. Moose hunting has also traditionally been and important part of the Ontario hunting scene. In recent years moose populations have declined to about 90,000 animals, which is still a significant number. The best moose hunting is generally in the more remote areas of the province. Ontario also a small population of elk, but the season is restricted to Ontario resident hunters only.
Upland game, including ruffed grouse and spruce grouse; turkeys; and waterfowl round out the varied hunting opportunities in Ontario. Learn more about the rules and regulations for hunting in Ontario at https://www.ontario.ca/page/hunting.

This was a pleasure. My stand was well prepared and comfortable. The food was great and home made. Nick and his mother Tina were very nice and helpful. We had a man show up to camp who had never hunted and unfired rifle. Nick got his gun zeroed and taught him to shoot. He got his bear on the second night. Six bears taken nine hunters. Everyone had a chance to take a bear. The fishing was very good also.
The weather was very hot for this time of year. Everything else in the outfitters power was great.

This hunt far exceeded my expectations. I was amazed at how hard this outfitter worked to make your hunt a successful and memorable one. The atmosphere was friendly and welcoming. I have physical limitations which I explained prior to booking my hunt and was assured I could be accommodated. It was unbelievable how well I was taken care of. I would 100% recommend this outfitter to anyone interested in getting value for your hard-earned money. I know that I will be planning to return.

Warner: Extremely knowledgeable, took excellent care of me, and appeared to be extremely interested in locating me a bear and working hard to do so.
Blueberry crop and lack of bears hitting bait sites.

Successful Father - Son Hunt

My son and I participated in a one-week black bear hunt at Nick’s Retreat. We both had a great time. I’ve never gone to a hunting camp that had return guests, never the less, several return customers. Many of the hunters had been there 2 to 7 times.
Both my son and I were successful. When I crossed the border back to the USA, the USA border patrol was surprised that we were both bringing home bear. From their perspective, this appeared to be a difficult week for bear hunters based on the number of unsuccessful hunters returning to the states.
There were approximately 12 hunters during the week we were there. I believe that 10 had shooting opportunities and 8 took home bear. Personally, I saw 4 bear on my first night. None of these were cubs.
From the reports and pictures that I saw of the following week, the camp had 100% success in 3 days with many people taking home very large bears.
At camp, the cabins had very comfortable beds and pillows. We arrived early and witnessed all sheets and comforters being cleaned. The lodge is large and comfortable. The food was incredible. They made sure that everyone had as much as they wanted. Nick’s staff and the hunters that participated in this week’s hunt were great. Everyone wanted every hunter to be successful. There was awesome team work, not just among Nick’s staff, but with the other hunters.
I was also impressed by the large area that Nick hunts. He only allows specific areas to be hunted each week so that the people coming the following week have virgin woods to hunt. His baits are also very far apart ensuring that each hunter has his own area.
If you are looking for an Ontario black bear hunt, I highly recommend Nick’s retreat.
