Hunting methods All hunting methods (14)

Being primarily a nocturnal animal, the best hunting time is dawn and dusk when emerging from cover to feed. They can be found anywhere and often close to human settlements and waterholes. They are usually hunted as a trophy of opportunity and can be difficult to hunt. In some provinces in South Africa, they are hunted from a pickup or at night using a spotlight which may not be considered very sporting. The best way to hunt Duiker is to glass the hunting area periodically looking for movement and then start your stalk once a suitable trophy has been spotted. They do enjoy a drink so if you are a bowhunter you could get lucky by just waiting patiently in a blind for a Duiker to appear.

Why hunt Grey Duiker?

Duiker derives their name from the Afrikaans (Dutch) word for ‘diver’. Grey Duikers especially tend to sprint off when alarmed and now and then jump into the air in a diving motion before disappearing in a thicket. Of the 22 Duiker species, 17 are huntable. The Grey Duiker may be one of the biggest Duikers and easiest ones to hunt due to its wide distribution but still extremely challenging if you decide to specifically try target one. Never overlook the chance to collect a Grey Duiker when the opportunity arises. They make fabulous full mounts, shoulder mounts, pedestal and European shield mounts.
