Golden Wildebeest hunting in Namibia

Golden Wildebeest (Gnu) is a colour variant bred by game ranchers in South Africa from a Blue Wildebeest colour strain that originated in the Tuli Block in Botswana. Their colour is more of a dirty brown than the bright golden colour that one might expect. However, there are some exceptions to the rules, especially when seen in the late afternoon sunlight. Golden Wildebeest have been introduced to Namibia and found in limited numbers and on limited game ranched in the country. As this colour-variant species is rare in Namibia, the trophy fees are still quite high. Both males and females have horns although the males have much wider and heavier horns. Golden Wildebeest, like all Wildebeest, can be a tough animal to bring down. Wounded Wildebeest must also be treated with respect and have been known to charge hunters during a follow-up. Currently, they are only hunted for their horns and skin and are still unaffordable to meat hunters. Golden Wildebeest are classified as Blue Wildebeest (Brindled Gnu) by the IUCN and listed as a species of least concern. No special hunting permits are required.
