Elk hunting in Montana

Elk hunting in Montana ({{totalToursString}})

“The Big Sky Country” boasts of a healthy elk herd, with some 135,000 animals, good options for combining an elk hunt with a hunt for mule or whitetail deer, black bear, mountain lion or upland birds. With the state producing many record-breaking trophies, Montana is one of elk hunting magnets. Resident hunters buy their elk licenses over the counter for a nominal fee of $10-$20. General Combination Non-Resident Licenses for one elk are available only by limited draw, and cost $884; an elk-deer combo costs $1046. However, some “B” type elk licenses, valid only for antlerless animals and only for certain specific areas, are cheaper and may be available over-the-counter. Draw odds for special permits required to hunt the best units (the 4 and 5 hunting districts), with good access and a record of good trophies may be as 1-3%. Many outfitters operate in the remote wilderness in the west of the state, which may be hard to access for a DIY hunter, and/or on private land The archery season covers most of September and October, and the general season continues until December. The first weeks of the general season, when you can still catch up with late bugling action, may be best. “Shoulder seasons” that open earlier and close later than the regular season are set only for certain units, antlerless only, and typically only private land.

Looking for best hunting trips for You...

Why do I see different types of prices?
There are two types of hunts on our platform: Package Hunts and Customizable Hunts. Package Hunts are fixed offers. Customizable Hunts usually allow you to select species and other parameters (number of hunters and guests, etc.) and then you can see the final price of your hunt.

"Package price" tag - this price tag is shown for package hunts, and it's a final price for an offer.

"Price from" tag - we show this tag for customizable hunts either when you search for particular species or when there is only one type of species in an offer. In both cases we include the minimum trophy fee available for this type of animal. It means that you see the final price of the offer, but you can also customize it (e.g. you can include a bigger trophy into your hunt).

"Daily rate fee" tag - this price does NOT include trophy fee. For example, if you are searching for a destination and we can't figure out the species you want, then we show this tag. You will need to include trophies from a hunt page.

7 Day Archery / Rifle Elk Hunt '21 Montana, United States

We offer both guided archery and guided rifle elk hunts for trophy class bulls across different resident herds here in Southwestern Montana. With several resident elk herds to hunt it allows us consistant success on key private ranches loaded with irrigated alfalfa fields, timbered ridges, foothills, and river bottom sanctuaries full of big game. Our elk hunting is done on semi-rugged to moderately rolling terrain between 5,000' & 7,000' in elevation. This allows us to offer a rather easy and enjoyable style of elk hunting straight from our main lodge, no horses, no pack trips or wall tents. Our elk hunters have access to private land in one of the best hunting regions in the state of Montana . Generally we can access most areas by 4 x 4 vehicle and then walk by foot to get into areas to glass for these bull elk. Calling is best in September for our bow hunters during the rut. September 21st is generally the peak of the rut for elk where we are located here in Montana. Early September and post rut dates in early October have also proven to be excellent weeks to harvest a trophy elk during archery season. Tree stands & haybale blinds are also methods that can be used during your hunt. We use a combination of tactics to adjust and get our clients opportunities at elk. Combo hunts for elk & deer, or antelope can also be accommodated. This will allow you to harvest a trophy whitetail deer, mule deer, or antelope here in Montana during your elk hunting trip. Archery, and all Combo Hunts are from Saturday to Saturday - arrival on Saturday, departure following Saturday, hunt 6 days Sun - Fri. Last dates available: archery September 28-October 5 Rifle Elk - sold out

2x1 Archery deer/elk como hunt '21 Montana, United States

Our elk hunting success rate is pretty consistent with other public lands success rates for the state of Montana landing somewhere around 20-30%. Our whitetail deer success rate is around 60% during the rifle season. It's difficult to measure whitetail success rate during our archery hunts since most hunters are totally focused on elk and killing a nice whitetail buck is generally more opportunistic than desired. Hunt whitetail deer/mule deer and elk in the heart of the Kootenai National Forest on this combination hunt with no additional trophy fees! We have been outfitting here in northwest Montana for over 25 years. This area is rich with game and looks more like the Pacific northwest than traditional big sky country. Best of all, this area is far less traveled and we go many days without seeing another hunter in the field. Typically we don't have huge herds of elk but instead has many small bands throughout each drainage averaging 6-12 animals. We actually like it that way since fewer eyes, ears, and noses offer us a bit of an advantage. This hunt is essentially a spot and stalk/calling adventure and the elk here still respond well. Whitetails are found in good numbers. Our bucks are big bodied and have the head gear to match and are found in same habitat as our elk. Our bow hunts are done on foot employing all elements of spot and stalk and still hunting techniques. Above all, you will increase your chances of success immeasurably by being in the best physical shape possible. The ridges are high, the drainages steep, and the timber is thick. Under the best and luckiest of conditions and circumstances, elk never come easy. They’re cagey, wary, extraordinarily beautiful and majestic and will test your nerve when bearing down on you—chest heaving, bugling, raking, on high alert even though they’re hot and all worked up in the rut.
