Crocodile hunting in South Africa

Worshipped, dangerous and feared, this prehistoric monster has inhabited the planet for more than 150 million years. The Nile crocodile, a gigantic lizard shaped reptile, needs little introduction and regularly receives airtime on numerous wildlife TV channels. Their colour is often determined by the clarity or stained water within which they reside. These large aquatic reptiles were historically found in the water warm bodies of northern and eastern South Africa. They are mostly hunted in their natural habitats in the Limpopo and Mpumalanga Provinces but have been introduced to many areas including KwaZulu-Natal where previously most Crocodiles were protected within the provincial parks boundaries of the Zululand region. Crocodiles may be hunted while basking in the sun but due to their good hearing and sight this is not as easy as it may sound. Most hunts are conducted from a temporary blind built over dead rotting bait where a potential Crocodile has been sighted. Prices range depending on the size of the Crocodile. International CITES permits and a Threatened or Protected Species permit is required when hunting a Crocodile in South Africa.
