Common Reedbuck hunting in Namibia

Common Reedbuck (Southern Reedbuck) is the animal that most resembles a White-tailed Deer in colour, size and stature; even some of their habits are very similar. The Common Reedbuck is the largest of the Reedbuck species with forward curving horns, like those of a mini Waterbuck. A rubbery tissue is found at the base of the horns making it unique from any other species of antelope. Common Reedbuck is not a desert species and is found in the grasslands and floodplains along the Cunene, Kavango and Chobe Rivers systems found in the Zambezi Province, formally known as the Caprivi Strip. Common Reedbuck is mostly a nocturnal animal, feeding mainly at night. They are best hunted during the cooler hours of the day as they spend most of their day resting, concealed in the long grass. Like White-tailed Deer they also flash their tails as a sign of danger and have a loud whistling alarm call. This call is also used to locate other Reedbuck in the area, especially at night. Common Reedbuck is classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN and no special hunting permits are required.
