Cape Fox hunting in South Africa

Cape Fox are also known as a Silver-backed Fox, Cama (Kama) Fox or Asse and is the only true fox that occurs in South Africa. A shy, nocturnal and wary predator. A Cape Fox has a long bushy tail and is named after the silver colouring on their backs. They are omnivorous, feeding on plants, fruit, beetles, insects, birds, eggs, spiders and any small mammals including young rabbits and hares. Cape Fox are found throughout the central and southern regions of the country although never in great numbers. They are most commonly hunted in the Free State, North West, Eastern and Northern Cape as well as the western regions of KwaZulu-Natal. Cape Fox are solitary animals, sometimes found in pairs when breeding. They are usually hunted at night with a spotlight and do respond to a predator caller. Cape Fox are most active just after dark and before dawn. They are hunted as a speciality species or a trophy of opportunity. Classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN. A Threatened or Protected Species (TOPS) hunting permit is required to hunt a Cape Fox in South Africa.
