Brown Hyena are an extremely shy nocturnal predator. This hairy predominantly brown coloured Hyena with short hind legs and a sloping back is much more of a scavenger seldom hunting larger animals. They are territorial, use communal dung heaps and will rest up during the day often digging fresh shelters using their strong front legs. As a general rule of thumb Brown Hyena’s home ranges tend not to overlap with Spotted Hyenas to avoid competition. Thus they are more at home in the semi-arid, grassland and dry bushveld regions of central and western South Africa. Most Brown Hyenas are hunted in the Limpopo and North West provinces. Brown Hyena can be attracted to bait and generally hunted from a blind. The bait can be hung from a tree or in many cases just left on the ground in areas where there are no Lions, Spotted Hyenas and minimal Bushpig activity that may feed on the bait. Brown Hyena are listed by the IUCN as near threatened. A Threatened or Protected Species (TOPS) permit must be pre-arranged prior to hunting and trophies may not be imported into the USA.
