Bear hunting in Canada

There are two species of bear in Canada: the brown bear (a.k.a. grizzly) and the black bear. Grizzly hunting, however, is currently legal only in one province: Yukon, where brown bear hunting leaves nothing to the better known destinations such as Alaska and Kamchatka. It is a true wilderness adventure, involving travel into the remote corners of the province, and sacrificing creature comforts for an exciting and dangerous experience. By contrast, black bear hunting in Canada is legal in every province and territory. Prices, opportunities, and available hunting methods, however, may vary. The more affordable options are baited hunts in such provinces as Nova Scotia, Ontario, New Brunswick and Quebec. Such hunts are usually done not far from civilization, and the hunters are lodged in comfortable tents. In the Central and Western provinces, such as Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia, you can find offers for spot-and-stalk black bear hunts and bear hunts with hounds. True to Bergmann’s rule, Canadian brown bears are usually bigger than their neighbors in the USA. Bears with skins that are not black, but brown, cymarron, and even beige (a.k.a. Color phase) are specially coveted by many hunters, and some areas in Canada are known hot-spots for color phase bears.
