Baboon hunting in Namibia

Chacma Baboons are the only species of Baboon found in Namibia in a range of habitats ranging from riverine forests, grasslands, bushveld and mountains. They prefer hilly terrain. One isolated population has adapted to living in the desert, however, they remain a water-dependent species. These omnivorous species have a diet ranging from leaves, fruit and flowers to insects, scorpions, small mammals and nestling birds. When hunting Baboons as vermin for killing sheep and goat lambs or destroying crops and thatch-roofed buildings, they can become extremely difficult to hunt. Sentries are posted to protect the troop and will alert the others with a loud bark of any impending danger. With ranchers providing permanent water for domestic stock and wild animals, Baboons have been able to extend their former home range but they prefer the hills and riverine areas where they roost at night on cliff faces and large trees in an attempt to elude predators, like Leopards. They have extremely keen eyesight and massive canines so be careful when approaching a wounded Baboon. CITES permits are required for the import and export of Baboons to control the international trade in primates. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) also have special import regulations for the importation of Baboon trophies into the USA.
