Grey Rhebuck hunting in South Africa

The Grey Rhebuck is also known as the Vaal Rhebuck or Rhebok in Afrikaans. This species is endemic to South Africa, and is believed to be the country’s most challenging antelope to hunt. A medium-sized animal with a grey wool-like coat and long thin neck. They are found in the exposed rocky mountain grasslands at high altitude which often requires a long shot to bag your trophy. The Grey Rhebuck is most popularly hunted in the Eastern Cape, but also found in the highlands of the Western Cape and Free State Provinces. More isolated pockets of the species can be hunted in KwaZulu-Natal and the Mpumalanga Drakensberg Mountain range. Usually these hunts involve walking great distances in cold windy and sometimes snowy conditions, so dress appropriately when hunting in their natural habitat. It’s as if these animals have a sixth sense and no matter if you belly crawl to the edge of a cliff, peep over the edge, they always seem to be anticipating your appearance before taking off over the next ridge. They are often referred to as the “Phantoms of the Mountains”.
