  • Our Story
  • The partnership between Cody Becker and Ben Satterthwaite was built on a shared passion for mountain hunting and a desire to offer something genuinely different within New Zealand’s hunting industry.
  • Rather than following the traditional outfitting model, they set out to create an experience centred around horseback hunting—a style of hunting that has a long and respected history in North America but is virtually unheard of in New Zealand. Their goal was simple: combine the rugged beauty of New Zealand’s high country with the authenticity and tradition of hunting from horseback.
  • Ben has spent his life around horses, hunting New Zealand’s mountains from a young age and working on large ranches throughout New Zealand and overseas. Cody is a professional hunting guide whose passion for mountain hunting has taken him around the world, including guiding horseback mountain goat and moose hunts each year in the mountains of British Columbia. Bringing together Ben’s horsemanship and Cody’s guiding experience naturally led to the development of New Zealand’s only dedicated horseback red stag hunting operation.
  • Horseback red stag hunts remain the cornerstone of what they offer, providing an experience that is about far more than simply reaching hunting country. Travelling by horseback allows hunters to immerse themselves in the landscape, access remote country with minimal disturbance, and experience the mountains in a way that few people ever do.
  • Beyond horseback hunting, they guide free-range hunts for New Zealand’s iconic mountain game, including bull tahr, chamois, and fallow deer. Every hunt is built around wild animals, challenging country, and an authentic backcountry experience.
  • Above all, they believe the best hunts are those where the journey is every bit as rewarding as the destination. Whether it’s riding out of camp before daylight, climbing into alpine basins in search of tahr, or hearing a red stag roar across a valley at first light, their aim is to share the kind of hunting experiences that leave lasting memories long after the hunt is over.

About this hunt

Our wilderness chamois hunts take place in some of New Zealand’s most remote alpine country, where these agile animals thrive among steep bluffs, rocky basins, and snow grass ridges. Access is typically by helicopter into a backcountry base camp, allowing us to hunt country that sees very little pressure and provides a true wilderness experience. Each day is spent glassing expansive alpine faces before making careful stalks across challenging terrain. Chamois are renowned for their sharp eyesight and ability to disappear into seemingly impossible country, making every successful stalk a rewarding achievement. These hunts require a reasonable level of fitness and are ideal for hunters who enjoy covering ground in spectacular mountain terrain. While success can never be guaranteed on a genuine free-range hunt, the quality of the experience, the scenery, and the challenge make this one of New Zealand’s most memorable alpine adventures. Whether you’re adding a chamois to your mountain hunting collection or making your first trip to New Zealand, our experienced guides will provide a safe, professional, and authentic wilderness hunt in some of the country’s finest alpine landscapes.
