Our company was established in 2024 and operates in 1 territory.
- Bae Widmier and Katrese Melville are the owners and operators of Baranof Backcountry Outfitters.
- Both lifelong, local Sitkans, and with more than a decade of experience exploring, hunting and guiding in Southeast and Interior Alaska, Bae and Katrese are uniquely equipped to offer guests the experience of a lifetime.
- From guided hunts, to photographic excursions, their knowledge of the the area, wildlife, weather and topography are a priceless asset for those wanting a chance to pursue an authentic, Alaskan backcountry experience.
- Bae is a registered guide in the State of Alaska. He began working as an assistant guide in 2014 and since then has guided both mainland and coastal southeast Alaska, as well as the Alaska range. His experience includes successfully guiding clients on mountain goat, Sitka blacktail deer, grizzly, brown bear, black bear, caribou, and moose hunts.
- Katrese has been guiding Southeast Alaska, and the Alaska Range, with Bae, since 2020. A 3rd generation Sitkan, she comes from a family of hunting guides and began packing for mountain goat and Sitka Blacktail deer as soon as she was able to. She grew up commercial fishing and continues to longline for Black Cod in the off season.
About this hunt
Hunt Sitka Black-Tail Deer in the pristine wilderness of Southeast Alaska aboard the M/V Denali. Our boat-
based hunts provide exclusive access to the remote landscapes of Baranof Island and Prince of Wales Island.
The hunt season runs from August 1st through December 31st, offering plenty of opportunities for a successful
expedition.
For a truly unique experience, you can combine your deer hunt with a mountain goat hunt in the alpine from
August through September. Alternatively, you can hunt during the rut in November, when conditions are ideal
for calling bucks in.
The 7-day guided hunt includes expert guides with extensive local knowledge, comfortable accommodations on
the M/V Denali, and access to game-rich terrain that is difficult to reach by land. We will also customize your
hunt to help you meet your goals, with careful consideration of the deer populations in the area. If the deer
population on Prince of Wales is impacted by predators like wolves, we’ll discuss alternative options.
