About this hunt

Enjoy a week or more of great hunting and great friendships in beautiful Colorado. You will be served great meals three times a day such as fall off the bone BBQ Ribs, Cornish Game Hens and thick Delmonico Steaks. Located in the center of the elk migratory path, Maybell, Colorado is just 40 minutes from Craig, Colorado - THE ELK CAPITAL OF THE WORLD. We have many repeat hunters and families that come to our lodge year after year. Owned by husband-and-wife team Jeff and Shari Kempton, Shari Kempton founded and was also the chairperson for the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation - Gainesville, Florida Chapter for over a decade and both are still actively involved. Jeff has been guiding this ranch for the past 35 years and knows the land as well as the animal movements throughout the private 27,000 - acre ranch. New alfalfa fields have been planted and water is supplied year round to ensure healthy and more resident animals. 2026 hunt dates for a 5 day 4th rifle season bull elk hunt - November 18-22 Must apply as a group- inquire for more info. The land owner voucher is included in the price of the hunt but the hunter will need to purchase the deer license ( resident $ 47.91 - non-resident $ 481.52 and a Habitat Stamp $ 12.15 ). Hunt dates are November 18 - 22. You arrive November 17th and depart November 23rd.

Lodge

Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner are served in the main lodge. After dinner you can either retire to the bunk house for a well earned restful nights sleep on brand new mattresses in the softest of soft Cabela's 3-D Camouflage flannel sheets, or you can hang out in the lodge for dessert. While waiting for dessert to be prepared you can watch the big screen TV, play cards or just enjoy the ambiance of the lodge.

Directions to R & R Ranch of Colorado, Inc. Lodge Cell: 970-326-3068 Shari Cell: 352-538-7094 IF THE WEATHER IS BAD DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT RABBIT EARS PASS JUST STAY ON 70 TO RIFLE From Denver: Take I-70 to Silverthorne, take 9 north, to Kremmling, and take 40 towards Steamboat Springs when you get to Steamboat Springs stay on 40, follow through to Craig then use directions below. From Craig, Colorado: Take HWY 40 west until you see mile marker 62. You know you will be getting close when you first go over the Yampa River and see a barn with the statue of liberty on the right. You will see road signs that read Price Creek and Meeker, take a left, that road is HWY 57, go about 6-7 miles, you’ll go around several curves, ( once you pass a cattle loading area on the right which is Cook Ranch you will be able to see a flat top mountain at you’re 1:00 if it’s daytime, if it’s dark you will see one light that is our place. At mile marker 16 you’ll go around a curve just before County Road 59S ( blue & yellow sign ) you will also see a small skinny wooden sign that says R & R Ranch and Freeman Gulch Road on top of one another. Turn right here and go 3 miles, you’ll be able to see a large 40 foot high dark green water tank on a grey primer iron beam tower. The water tank has R & R Ranch painted on it as well as the American and Colorado State Flag painted on it. If it's dark there will be a few solar lights spotting the flags. There is also big blue water tank at our entrance. Keep going until you see County Road 59 and a building on the left in the middle of a field and a Bitter Brush sign on the right near a cattle loading area to he left. You should see our large log entrance with a wrought iron black R & R Ranch sign on top. Turn right through the entrance ( do not turn towards the mobile home on top of the hill to your left ) keep going straight for 4 more miles until you come to our cabin, it has a green tin roof and we have a large bronze elk statue in our front yard ( don’t shoot it by mistake ). It is also the only house out here so you can’t miss it. Watch for animals & drive carefully.

TAGs & licenses

Big Game

The primary system for allocating Colorado big game licenses is through a limited license draw. Most deer, elk, pronghorn, bear, and moose tags are distributed via an application and lottery draw each spring (typically with an early April application deadline). Hunters earn preference points for each year they are unsuccessful in a draw, which improves odds for high-demand units in future years.

Elk: Colorado offers over-the-counter (OTC) elk licenses for certain seasons/units (for example, archery elk hunts in some units are available without drawing). However, limited units and muzzleloader or first rifle seasons for elk are all by draw.

Deer: All buck deer licenses are limited draw; some leftover or OTC antlerless licenses may be available after the draw.

Pronghorn, Sheep and Moose: all licenses are limited draw (Moose and Sheep tags are very limited).

Black bear: Colorado has a unique system where hunters can buy an OTC bear license in many units if they hold a deer or elk license for the same area/season (an “add-on” bear license), or they can apply for a limited bear tag.

Mountain lion: licenses are sold OTC (season runs winter months) but mountain lion hunters must call in to check available quotas in the unit before hunting.

Small Game

Colorado offers a separate Small Game license which covers upland game (such as pheasant, quail, grouse), small game mammals (rabbits, squirrels), and migratory birds (waterfowl, doves). Small game licenses are available over-the-counter to residents and non-residents.

All migratory bird hunters must obtain a HIP registration number (free) when they buy their license. Waterfowl hunters need to purchase a Colorado State Waterfowl Stamp and carry a Federal Duck Stamp.

Wild turkey: Turkey hunting in Colorado is regulated separately; a turkey license/tag is required for spring or fall turkey seasons. Many turkey units are limited and require applying in the license draw (spring turkey applications are due in February). Some turkey licenses (especially fall or leftover spring tags) can be bought OTC if quotas allow.

Minimum Hunter Age

The minimum age to hunt big game in Colorado is 12 years old. For small game, there is no strict minimum age – children under 12 may hunt small game under close adult supervision (with a mentor’s license or a youth mentor license program). Hunters under 16 must be accompanied by an adult while hunting.
