Where to hunt Royal Wildebeest
The royal wildebeest is a rare and visually striking color variation of the common blue wildebeest, selectively bred for its unique appearance. Distinguished by its lighter, silvery coat and sometimes golden or white facial markings, the royal wildebeest stands out as an exceptional trophy for hunters seeking something beyond the traditional plains game species. As a selectively bred variant, the royal wildebeest is primarily found on private game ranches in South Africa.
Price distribution
Due to its rarity and selective breeding, the royal wildebeest commands a higher price than common blue or black wildebeest. Trophy fees can be on the order of $15,000, depending on the outfitter and the quality of the specimen. Daily rates for South African plains game hunts generally range between $250 and $500 per day, with full multi-day hunting packages, including accommodations and meals, priced from $2,500 to $6,000.

When to hunt Royal Wildebeest?
Royal wildebeest can be hunted year-round in South Africa, thanks to the favorable hunting regulations in these countries. However, the best months for hunting are from May to September, during the dry winter season. During this time, vegetation is thinner, making spotting and stalking easier, and animals are more concentrated around water sources. Cooler temperatures also make for more comfortable hunting conditions, allowing for longer and more productive days in the field. May to July, when the wildebeest rut, and the bulls do their display rituals, is believed to be the best time.

Hunting methods
Hunting a royal wildebeest does not differ much from hunting the regular wildebeest. Spot-and-stalk is the most effective method for rifle hunters, whereas bowhunters prefer setting up near waterholes. Wildebeest have a reputation for being tough animals, and the royal wildebeest is no exception. A caliber in the .270 to .300 Magnum range is recommended for a clean, ethical harvest. Hunters should aim for the shoulder or just behind the front leg for the best shot placement.
Why hunt Royal Wildebeest?
The royal wildebeest is a stunning and unique trophy that stands apart from traditional plains game species. Its lighter coat and distinctive markings make it a centerpiece for any trophy collection, and its rarity adds to its value as a collector’s prize.Beyond the trophy, hunting royal wildebeest offers an exciting plains game challenge in the breathtaking landscapes of southern Africa.
