Roosevelt sable hunting in Tanzania

Roosevelt Sable is, without a doubt, one of the world’s most astounding antelope. They have glossy, coal-black coats and manes with a white face mask, underparts and hindquarter below the tail. They stand high on their muscular shoulders and have long curved ringed horns which may nearly reach the shoulders of a big bull. Both sexes have horns and the females are a rustier colour. Roosevelt Sable occurs in the southern (Selous) and central (Kizigo and Rungwa) regions of the country. Roosevelt Sable is one of Africa’s most prized trophies. Every breeding herd has a dominant bull that will not tolerate another sexually mature bull in his territory. They are often found on forest fringes in long grass areas and favour open dambo (seasonal shallow wetland) areas to feed. These animals are renowned as difficult to bring down with a single shot and their venison is rated as one of the best in Africa. Roosevelt Sable is not classified separately from the Common or Southern Sable by the IUCN. The magnificent antelope is listed as a species of least concern by the IUCN, no special import or export permits are required. Sable may only be hunted with a minimum of a 21-day hunting license in Tanzania.
