Where to hunt Robert's Gazelle
The Robert's gazelle (Nanger granti robertsi) is a distinctive subspecies of Grant's gazelle, primarily found in northern Tanzania, particularly within the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. This region encompasses areas such as the Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti National Park, and the vicinity of Lake Natron. Only a few selected outfitters offer hunts in this area, making the Robert’s gazelle a unique and rare trophy.
Price distribution
Hunting the Robert's gazelle is typically conducted as part of a broader East African safari. Tanzania is, if money is no concern, perhaps the best destination in Africa, flavored with the fame of “Snows of Kilimanjaro”, “Out of Africa”, and other prose and film, and is consequently one of the most expensive. Robert’s gazelle can be hunted on the minimum possible Tanzanian safari, the 7-day license, which typically costs upwards of $20,000 before trophy fees. The Tanzanian government sets a trophy fee of $450 for Robert's gazelle; however, when accounting for additional community development and anti-poaching fees, the total fee can reach $2,000.

When to hunt Robert's Gazelle?
The hunting season in Tanzania runs from May to December. The best time for hunting the Robert's gazelle is believed to align with the peak of the dry season, when game animals are concentrated around water sources and thinner vegetation makes them more visible.

Hunting methods
Hunting Robert’s gazelle follows the general flow of an Eastern African plains game hunt.
Spot-and-stalk is the most effective method, as these gazelles inhabit vast grasslands with little cover. Hunters must scan the terrain with binoculars, locate a suitable trophy, and carefully plan their approach to avoid detection. Their keen eyesight and skittish nature make closing the distance a challenge, often requiring long-range shooting. A flat-shooting rifle caliber is required, as shots can often be taken at ranges up to 300 yards. A Robert’s gazelle looks close enough to Grant’s gazelle as it is, and some interbreeding occurs between subspecies, so a trained eye of an experienced PH is essential to correctly identify the perfect trophy.
Why hunt Robert's Gazelle?
The horns of the Robert’s gazelle have (in males) a unique downward and outward bend, which along with somewhat bigger size distinguishes them from other subspecies of the Grant’s gazelle. These horns aren’t easy to add to a trophy collection - apart from the challenge of stalking this vigilant animal across the vast Serengeti plains, its limited distribution accounts for the difficulty. But under the endless African skies, these considerations fade into the background. It’s simply being there that matters most.
