Gemsbuck (Oryx) is an iconic Namibian species portrayed all over the country’s tourism marketing materials. This incredibly beautiful fawn grey coloured antelope with a black-and-white facial mask and is specially adapted to survive the harsh desert conditions. With low metabolism and by minimising water loss from perspiration by increasing their body temperature, they can survive for long periods on the moisture from the foods they eat. Gemsbuck have incredibly good eyesight and both sexes have long rapier-like horns. Hunting records indicate that many magnificent trophies have been taken in Namibia with the majority of the longest horned Gemsbuck being females. Although thicker at the base than female horns, male Gemsbuck are always sharpening their horns ready for combat and in the process wearing down the tips. They can be hunted throughout the country except for the Caprivi. The best trophies are taken in the northwest and southeast (Kalahari Region) of the country. Apart from their beautiful skins and horns, their meat is also a sought after table delicacy. They are classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN and no special hunting permits are required.
