Where to hunt Mallard Duck
The mallard is the quintessential duck. It is this species that was domesticated around 2,000 b.c. in modern China, and it is the most widely distributed and recognizable duck species in the world, making it a favorite among waterfowl hunters. Found across North America, Europe, and parts of Asia, mallards thrive in a variety of habitats, including wetlands, lakes, rivers, and agricultural fields.
Everywhere across its range, from marshes of the United Kingdom to the steppe lakes of Asia, hunters pursue the mallard with equal relish. You can find mallard hunting options on its wintering grounds on the Mediterranean Coast and among the fjords of Scandinavia. In North America, prime hunting destinations include the Mississippi and Central Flyways, with states like Arkansas, Louisiana, the Dakotas, and California offering exceptional opportunities during migration. Canada’s Prairie Provinces—Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta—are legendary for early-season hunts as mallards congregate in vast numbers.
Price distribution
Mallard hunting is accessible and affordable, making it an excellent choice for waterfowl hunters of all experience levels. In North America, guided mallard hunts typically range from $200 to $500 per day, depending on location, group size, and included services. Multi-day packages with lodging and meals can cost between $1,000 and $2,500. In Europe, “rough shooting” hunts are similarly priced. However, driven duck shoots with dozens if not hundreds birds shot per day, often with luxury catering and accommodation included, can cost significantly more.

When to hunt Mallard Duck?
Mallard hunting seasons are closely tied to migration patterns and local regulations. In North America, the season generally begins in early fall (September) and runs through winter, with peak hunting in November and December as northern flocks migrate south. Canada offers some of the earliest opportunities in September, while the southern United States provides extended hunting into January. In Europe, mallard hunting typically occurs during the late autumn and winter months. Limited spring seasons may be open in some non-EU countries in Eastern Europe as well.

Hunting methods
Mallard hunting is versatile, offering hunters a range of exciting methods to suit different environments and preferences. The default way to hunt mallards are from blinds with calls and decoys. The blinds are mostly located on shallow lakes and parts of rivers - as river ducks, mallards tend to avoid deeper water. However, hunting from layout blinds on the fields is also practiced.
Pass shooting, where hunters position themselves along flight paths to intercept passing birds, is another exciting method. If cover allows, jump shooting, on foot or from a small boat, can be effective as well. For the most abundant shooting, check out European driven bird hunts, where beaters flush mallards toward hunters, although not everyone may find shooting released birds agreeable. In some Eastern European and Asian locations, traditional hunting with live decoys is still practiced.
Mallards can be hard to kill, and when winged, few birds are so cunning and skilled at hiding and evading hunters, that for many waterfowlers hunting mallards without a good retriever is a sacrilege. Good shooting, guns, and ammo (non-toxic ammunition is mandatory in North America and many other countries) are essential as well.
