Lichtenstein Hartebeest hunting in Zambia
We found 1 hunt
Zambia’s only Hartebeest species, the Lichtenstein’s Hartebeest stands high on the shoulders and has a sloping back. Their colouring is a tawny brown with a brownish saddle and elongated head. Both females and males have S-shaped horns with the male’s horns being noticeably thicker.
Liechtenstein’s Hartebeest is distributed countrywide except in the Zambezi Valley adjoining Kariba Dam and in Barotseland west of the Zambezi River.
Liechtenstein’s Hartebeest occurs in small family groups dominated by a bull that will oust all younger bulls when they become sexually mature. During the breeding season, they will defend a territory and their harem. These animals are reputed to be one of the fastest antelope in Africa but have the tendency to be inquisitive which often leads to their downfall when being hunted.
They are classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN, no special export and import permits are required.
