Klipspringer is a compact small goat-like antelope that walk on the tips of their rubbery hooves making them extremely agile rock climbers. They are classified as one of the Pygmy Antelope (Tiny Ten) species by Safari Club International. This small brownish-coloured animal with black speckles has a thick, coarse coat that rustles when touched. Only the males have horns and if longer than their ears are considered an exceptional trophy. Klipspringer is available for hunting throughout Tanzania but is most commonly hunted in Masailand. Klipspringers prefer rocky, stony hills, koppies (small hills) or ground with short cover. They will move down onto flat ground to feed and drink but are more at home amongst the rocks. They are best hunted in the early morning when sunning themselves on the exposed rocks. When approached they often freeze, standing motionless, inquisitively watching the approaching hunting party. However, once they decide to run they can cover ground over the rocks and steep terrain at an exceptional speed. Klipspringer is classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN and no special hunting permits are required. A hunting Tanzanian licence must be purchased before the hunt begins.
