Jackal hunting in Zimbabwe {{ totalToursString }}
Two Jackal species occur in Zimbabwe, the Side Striped Jackal and the Black Backed Jackal, the latter being the more commonly recognisable of the two Jackal species.
There are eight recognised subspecies of Side Strpped Jackals on the continent of which only one is represented in Zimbabwe. The Southern Side Striped Jackals are smaller than a Coyote with somewhat similar greyish-brown colouring. They have a white stripe (sometimes a dark stripe) running lengthwise along their flank.
The Southern Black Backed Jackal has a more distinctive black saddle, with reddish, orange-brown legs with a white belly and throat area. These Jckals live in pairs and will viciously defend their territory from intruders. In small livestock farming areas, they can become a problem killing newly born calves and lambs.
Both Jackal species are listed as species of least concern by the IUCN.
