Hyena hunting in Cameroon

Two Hyena species occur in Cameroon, namely, the Spotted Hyena and the Striped Hyena. Both species can be hunted and no special permit is required to hunt Striped Hyenas as is the case in some other African countries. Both species occur in the northern savannah regions of the country. When the two species are compared there are not only colour differences but also size differences. The Spotted Hyena is much larger and has much stronger jaw muscles able to crack open a giraffe leg bone. The Spotted Hyena's jaws are reputedly stronger than that of a Grizzly Bear. Spotted Hyenas are also found in packs, known as clans that are dominated by a female matriarch whilst Striped Hyenas live in smaller clans but however, hunt as individuals. Hyenas are classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN.
