Mountain hunting adventure

Ancient culture
Tajikistan has a rich and ancient culture dating back to when it was the crossroads of Asia in the days of the Silk Road
About hunting in Tajikistan
Tajikistan is a small, mountainous country located in Central Asia. Some 90 percent of its land area is covered by the soaring peaks of the Pamir Mountains, which rise to more than 24,000 feet and are home to the world’s most sought-after wild sheep, the Marco Polo argali. Tajikistan, with Kyrgystan, is one of just two countries in the world where these magnificent argali can be hunted. Because of the sheer difficulty of access and the remoteness of the terrain they inhabit, Marco Polo are very abundant here; hunters will likely see hundreds of sheep every day.
Average horn length for Marco Polo sheep taken in Tajikistan ranges from 55 to 59 inches, but every year some sheep of 60 inches and larger are taken. In fact, the largest Marco Polo sheep ever recorded have come from Tajikistan, including the world record, taken by Hossein (Soudy) Golabchi, with horns of 71 7/8 x 73 inches. Hunters may also take Mid-Asian ibex and wild boar. Mid-Asian ibex trophy quality is very good, ranging between 42 and 50 inches.
The Pamir Mountains are some of the most beautiful in the world and the terrain is wild, barren, and remote. There is nothing easy about a Marco Polo hunt: Base camps are located at 12,000 feet and hunting take place at 14,000 to 15,000 feet or even higher. Russian 4-wheel-drive jeeps are used to transport hunters to base camp over extremely rough and rugged roads.

Everything about this hunt was great. It is pretty rare to dream about taking a trip for a long time and actually have it surpass your expectations, but this hunt definitely did that. The hiking was physically challenging but not impossible, it truly felt like we had earned the animal at the end of the hunt. On the second day of hunting we spotted a group with multiple large males about 1.5 miles from base camp. We started hiking in the morning and both my dad and I were successful in taking mature males from that group. Overall it was an incredible experience and would highly recommend to anyone looking for an adventure. PS. The hunting rangers were awesome. I couldn’t have asked for a better group to guide us on this hunt.
Everything was great.

This was unquestionably one of the most memorable hunts and adventures of my life. Now age 70, I’ve done a lot of red deer stalking in Scotland, and hunted elsewhere in the world,. But this trip was one I shall never forget. Challenging, arduous, exhausting, at altitude, stunning scenery and ultimately successful. And very well organised by the outfitter – everything went like clockwork with great attention to detail.
“Didn’t like” is the wrong expression. But I offer some words of warning to anyone who is considering this hunt, which I thought fantastic.
It is tough.
I’m 70 and fit and was successful, but the terrain is difficult and the altitude very tiring.
A long walk out to the camp, occasionally on dangerous narrow ledges and paths where a slip would be disastrous.
Then a stalk involving strenuous climbs up boulder strewn paths. The camp was at 8,500 feet; we shot the beast at 11,500 thousand. If you’re not used to this altitude, you will be amazed how much more tiring it is than walking around at sea level.
I was also lucky to get the beast at the end of day one of a five day hunt. I doubt very much. I would’ve been able to climb that mountain five times in succession. The day of the hunt, we left the camp at 4 am and returned at 7 pm in the dark. It was a long day.
I was hunting very early in the season, which meant the beasts were very high up in the mountains. The weather was glorious. Later on would be colder, but probably the Ibex lower. Your choice.
So just recognise you’re going to be in the middle of nowhere, in a dangerous situation, expanding a lot of energy. If that’s your bag, then this trip is for you.
As I say, I loved it.

As great as the Ibex hunting was, the people are what made this trip so great. The people in the mountain communities invited us into their homes and treated us like family. From a place to stay, to guiding us and contributing their livestock to our success, It truly was a community based hunt.
Nothing. Everything was great.

I never thought I’d be able to hunt ibex in my lifetime… it was literally just a dream. Making that dream a reality and doing it with my best friend was just awesome. I highly recommend this experience if you enjoy mountain hunting. The mountains and landscape are amazing. I have been mountain hunting in my home range (north cascades) most of my life but the scale of the Pamirs is on another level. It was a must do hunt for me.
The ibex themselves are incredible animals from their unparalleled climbing ability, to their impressive horns and stout/sturdy bodies and legs. It’s awesome to observe these animals in their natural environment.
The rangers/guides, driver, logistics coordinator, and interpreter were all great people. You are in good hands and they go above and beyond to ensure your experience is the best possible. You can trust these people to look out for your best interests at all times. Keep in mind your interpreter may not be with you past the main camp so bring a pen and paper to make communication easier. Knowing a few basic words goes a long ways.
Once the rangers/guides trusted our hiking/hunting and technical abilities they actually allowed us to take part in the packing out of our animals/gear. This is a very important part of the hunt for us so we really appreciated that opportunity!
There was nothing about the trip I didn’t like. There were some flight issues outside the control of all involved and they actually allowed us to make up time by hiking in the same day we landed and then when we got back they used their connections to help us get flights back home.
Get in shape for this hunt and drink lots of water in the mountains it’s easy to be dehydrated if you’re not used to the climate.
