About hunting in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, stretching from the shores of the Caspian Sea to the snowy peaks of the Caucasus, is best known for the elusive Dagestan tur, a mountain goat that challenges even the most seasoned outdoorsmen, as well as abundant bird hunting.

Azerbaijan on map

Azerbaijan lies in the South Caucasus, bordered by the Caspian Sea to the east, Russia and Georgia to the north, Armenia to the west, and Iran to the south. The northern frontier is dominated by the towering peaks of the Greater Caucasus, the west by the Lesser Caucasus, while the central Kura-Aras lowland is a fertile agricultural region.

Hunting methods

The Dagestan tur hunt is a classic mountain hunting scenario with spotting and stalking at high altitudes. Hunts often require horseback approaches followed by long climbs on foot. Shots are usually taken at long distances, demanding excellent marksmanship. Wild Boar is pursued in both driven hunts and by stalking in cultivated areas and forests. Waterfowl is usually hunted from the blind, positioned to intercept the birds as they fly from their resting areas in the sea to the feeding grounds on the fields and back. Pheasants, francolins, and partridges are often hunted over pointing dogs. Hunting in Azerbaijan is tightly regulated, and tur hunting in particular is conducted with special permits and under guidance of licensed outfitters.
