Elephant hunting in Tanzania

Elephants, the world’s largest pachyderm and terrestrial mammal. These massive animals spend the best part of their day in search of food and are water dependent species but able to travel large distances from water in search of quality food. Elephants are fascinating animals that are able to communicate long distances using low frequency sounds. They have very poor eyesight but a good sense of smell. Elephant populations are distributed across the southern, central and western areas of the country. Unfortunately, due to ivory poaching their numbers have been devastated in some areas where not well protected by anti-poaching units. The largest remaining Elephant population is in the Selous. Elephants can also be hunted in the Rungwa area and some huge elephants are taken from time to time in the swamps of Western Tanzania. To hunt an Elephant in Tanzania you require a CITES permit from your country of residence prior to a 21 day hunting license being issued by the Tanzania government officials. Trophies may not be imported into the USA and the European Union countries. Only Elephant bulls may be hunted with the heaviest tusk not weighing more than 15kg or not measuring more than 1.50m in length. Possible changes to these policies need to be closely monitored as changes to these regulations may occur at short notice.
