Elephant hunting in Namibia
We found 14 hunts
Elephants are the world’s largest terrestrial mammal. These giants spend most of their day feeding and in the more arid parts of the country need to walk incredibly long distances to satisfy their food intake. They can feed far from water but are a water dependent species that thrive in the subtropical Caprivi conditions. The Desert Elephants of Namibia will dig for water in the dry sandy riverbeds.
Although Elephants have poor eyesight, they have a good sense of smell so need to be approached from downwind. They are also known to communicate via low-frequency sounds, termed "infrasound" and even seismic signals sensed via their feet over an estimated distance of 10 – 20 miles. They can hear acoustic signals for up to 6 miles travelling through the air.
Namibia’s Elephant population is concentrated in the subtropical habitat of the Caprivi and north eastern parts of the country, more specifically, the Kavango East and West wastelands, Bushmanland (northern Kalahari). In the Caprivi region these animals move freely between Angola in the north and Botswana in the south. Most Elephants are hunted in these regions but every now and then a Desert Elephant becomes available for hunting in the community hunting concessions further west.
Hunting prices are often determined by the size of their tusks. The price of these Elephant hunts often excludes many additional fees, like conservation (anti-poaching), community (welfare support programmes), licenses and permits. Both exportable and non-exportable trophy fee options are available. Classified as a vulnerable species by the IUCN, CITES permits will be required for this hunt. Hunting bans and closures often happen at short notice with these pachyderms, so ensure you keep yourself up to date with the ever changing regulations. To import Elephant trophies in the USA an ESA import permit is required.
