East African Impala has the largest horns of all the Impala species found in Africa. The Southern Impala, the most common of all Impala are often the first species taken by hunters who come to Africa. However, the East African Impala is somewhat of a speciality animal with outstanding horns. Both species are identical, but the East African Impala has substantially bigger (wider & longer) horns than the Southern Impala. In fact, the minimum horn length to enter the Rowland Ward Record book is 26” which is way over most of the Southern Impala's top-ranked trophies. East African Impala is mostly hunted in Masailand as far south as the Selous. There is a 100-mile Imapla free zone between the distribution of east African Impala and Southern Impala. East African Impalas are a water-dependent species, active day and night, alternating between resting and grazing. They will actively defend their territories during the rutting season snorting and grunting whilst chasing other males. Many who are not familiar with this sound would think it is made by a pig. Classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN, no special export permits are required. A prepaid minimum of a 7-day hunting license must be prearranged before hunting this species.
