East African Bushbuck are the smallest of the four species of spiral-horned antelope group found in Tanzania, the others being Eland, Kudu and Sitatunga. These medium sized antelope are mainly nocturnal, inhabit the thick undergrowth during the day, and may be found feeding along the forest or riverine margins early in the morning or late afternoon. It can be all a little confusing as to which species of Bushbuck you are hunting in Tanzania. Some refer to the species found in the south as Chobe Bushbuck and those found in Masailand as Masai Bushbuck. However, SCI recognises all the Bushbuck hunted in Tanzania as East African Bushbuck. Other areas where Bushbuck can be hunted are Maswa, Selous, Kizigo, Rungwa and the Moyowosi of Western Tanzania. Bushbuck are generally solitary animals, have keen eyesight with a dog like bark as a danger call. Wounded Bushbuck need to be treated with respect as they may charge especially if backed into a thicket. Classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN, no special export permits are required. A prearranged 14 day hunting license must be purchased prior to hunting this species.
