Bushpigs are normally referred to as Red River Hogs and belong to the wild pig family. They have a distinctly orange to reddish brown colour and the entire body is covered with hair. The legs are black and adults have white markings around the eyes with black faces. The boars are bigger than the sows and the species is native to tropical Africa. Bushpig can be hunted in the rainforests, wet dense savannahs, forested valleys and in the dense vegetation riverine vegetation found along rivers, lakes and marshes found in Cameroon. Bushpigs are primarily nocturnal but may be encountered at early dawn or dusk. They typically live in small sounders with one dominant boar. Being omnivorous animals they will anything from roots, tubers, bulbs, fruit, eggs and dead animal and plant remains. They have an incredibly good sense of smell but may be heard before being seen as they communicate almost continuously using an assortment of grunts and squeals. They enjoy a good wallow so may often be stumbled upon in marshy areas or a muddy pond. They are fast runners and also known as strong swimmers. Bushpigs (Red River Hogs) is classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN, no special export and import permits are required but a prearranged hunting license must be purchased by your outfitter. However, hog trophies exported to the USA need to comply with the USDA trophy import regulations.
