African Wild Cat hunting in Zimbabwe

African Wild Cats are easily mistaken for a grey domestic house cat with which they easily interbreed. They occur in all habitat types throughout the country as long as there is sufficient dense thickets, tall grass and rocky areas for shelter. They can be found throughout the country but are shy, solitary nocturnal animals and so seldom seen. Like all cats, they are good tree climbers but spend most of their time on the ground. When pursued they often seek refuge in a tree especially when trying to escape from other predators. African Wild Cats are normally hunted as a trophy of opportunity and most likely shot during a night hunt in areas that permit night hunting making use of a spotlight. They feed on an assortment of creatures from small rodents, lizards, snakes, birds and will catch animals as large as a scrub hare. When threatened they hiss and hum especially when protecting their young. African Wild Cats are classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN and no special permits are required to hunt this species.
