More about us

Our company was established in 1948 and operates in 1 territory.
  • A/Z Outfitters was established in 1948 by Dix Anderson. He began operating up Dutch Creek in the East Kootenays of British Columbia. Amongst the territory, backcountry cabins were built, only accessible by horse. Today, we operate the same way, using horses to pack up gear and hunt the mountains, and old cabins to stay in. In 1990, Bill DuBois bought the territory and continued guiding a variety of hunts including: Elk, Moose, Mountain Goat, Mule Deer, and Black Bear.
  • In 2010, Bill’s son, Brent DuBois bought the company and remains the current owner. As of 2016 we have expanded our territory into Toby Creek, meaning we hunt 1100 sq. miles, with about 400 sq miles of this territory being inside the Purcell Wilderness Conservancy with nine cabin camps.
  • This is truly a prime trophy hunting destination, a real slice of pristine wilderness that is yours to be seen, featuring Elk, Goat, Bear, Moose, Deer and Cougar hunts. Our impressive game, experienced guides and noble horses are surely provide hunters the hunt of a lifetime.

About this hunt

These May and June Spring hunts are an amazing backcountry experience- to say the least. These beautiful black bears graze throughout the open slides in our mountainous territories in Toby and Dutch Creek. Unlike the mighty mountain goat, the black bears tend to live lower down, making for a more laid-back, less physically demanding hunt. Day one of the hunt is spent riding up to one of our main camps, which can be anywhere from a 3 to 6-hour horseback ride. Everywhere travel in our territories is done by horse- unless hiking is a better option during a stalk. We have multiple hunting spots not too far from our main cabin camps- meaning we will always be staying in a cabin. The cabins in our territory have bunk beds with foamies, and a cook cabin with a fridge, stove, and oven. From days 2-6, the majority of each day is spent glassing at the hunting points we ride to each morning from the cabin. Unlike elk, black bears aren’t necessarily wondering at a specific time in the early morning. They generally tend to come out into the open on the warmer days, so our guides do their best to prioritize the best times throughout each day. Sometimes, days can be spent getting up early anyhow, and glassing for hours on the mountainside. Our experienced skillful guides know where to go and what to do- but at the end it is YOUR hunt. They will customize it just for you. Our biggest goal is for our clients to enjoy their experience. The hunt is YOURS. We do not need a set schedule or routine if you have something else you would prefer. Our guides and wranglers are simply there to support and guide you, and to ensure we are operating legally and safely. We want to do everything in our power to give you your dream hunt, and an experience you’ll treasure forever.
