Über die Jagd in Asien
Hunting in Asia is a grand adventure. The world’s largest continent, it holds more varieties of large animals than any other continent on Earth. Asia is a paradise for the mountain hunter, with the largest variety of wild sheep and goats found anywhere in the world. Asia also offers opportunities to hunt bears, gazelles, roe deer, stags, and other antlered game. The continent not only offers great hunting but also fantastic travel opportunities, with the chance to experience different cultures. In addition to wild country and lots of game, you will see mosques, temples, historic ruins, and ancient cities and towns.
Some of the most sought-after species in Asia include the many species of ibex, from the bezoar ibex of Turkey to the mid-Asian ibex of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan to the Altai ibex of Mongolia. Asia is home to the world’s largest wild sheep, the argali. Best known is the Marco Polo argali, hunted in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, but the Altai and Gobi argali of Mongolia are also impressive, sought-after sheep. The tur of the Caucasus Mountains are said to be among the most difficult animals in the world to hunt because of the steep terrain where they live. Huge red stags and large roe deer are found in many parts of Asia, as are massive brown bears.
Travel in Asia can be challenging because of the large distances to be covered, so some patience and flexibility in your plans is helpful. In many cases there is also a language barrier, as English is not widely spoken in much of Asia. Most outfitters will provide an interpreter in camp, but it’s likely your guide will not speak English. Depending on the region and species to be hunted, the terrain can be very difficult, as Asia holds the world’s highest and most rugged mountain ranges. Asia is not an easy place to hunt, but it holds great rewards for the adventurous hunter.

Incredible experience and a true mountain hunt

Everything about this hunt was great. It is pretty rare to dream about taking a trip for a long time and actually have it surpass your expectations, but this hunt definitely did that. The hiking was physically challenging but not impossible, it truly felt like we had earned the animal at the end of the hunt. On the second day of hunting we spotted a group with multiple large males about 1.5 miles from base camp. We started hiking in the morning and both my dad and I were successful in taking mature males from that group. Overall it was an incredible experience and would highly recommend to anyone looking for an adventure. PS. The hunting rangers were awesome. I couldn’t have asked for a better group to guide us on this hunt.
Everything was great.

This was unquestionably one of the most memorable hunts and adventures of my life. Now age 70, I’ve done a lot of red deer stalking in Scotland, and hunted elsewhere in the world,. But this trip was one I shall never forget. Challenging, arduous, exhausting, at altitude, stunning scenery and ultimately successful. And very well organised by the outfitter – everything went like clockwork with great attention to detail.
“Didn’t like” is the wrong expression. But I offer some words of warning to anyone who is considering this hunt, which I thought fantastic.
It is tough.
I’m 70 and fit and was successful, but the terrain is difficult and the altitude very tiring.
A long walk out to the camp, occasionally on dangerous narrow ledges and paths where a slip would be disastrous.
Then a stalk involving strenuous climbs up boulder strewn paths. The camp was at 8,500 feet; we shot the beast at 11,500 thousand. If you’re not used to this altitude, you will be amazed how much more tiring it is than walking around at sea level.
I was also lucky to get the beast at the end of day one of a five day hunt. I doubt very much. I would’ve been able to climb that mountain five times in succession. The day of the hunt, we left the camp at 4 am and returned at 7 pm in the dark. It was a long day.
I was hunting very early in the season, which meant the beasts were very high up in the mountains. The weather was glorious. Later on would be colder, but probably the Ibex lower. Your choice.
So just recognise you’re going to be in the middle of nowhere, in a dangerous situation, expanding a lot of energy. If that’s your bag, then this trip is for you.
As I say, I loved it.

Hunting was challenging with a lot of glassing. Be prepared for long shots, 350+ yards. It was a great cultural experience to interact with the guides and villagers. Also, we ate at many different local restaurants which was an added bonus to sample a variety of foods. We were treated like family. We had help getting the rifles through customs and police stations at all the airports, which is definitely needed.
Ahmet, the outfitter, speaks good English and is very organized. He is with you almost all of the time. The local guides are excellent spotters and hikers, but do not speak English well. At times, there were communication problems. Some of this is my issue as I don’t speak any Turkish.
