Warthog hunting in Zimbabwe

Warthogs are comical looking animals and always run with their tails straight up in the air. Both males and females have tusks, although the males generally have much larger sought after tusks. The best tuskers are normally found in areas with sandy soils and are used as a digging tool to find underground bulbs, tubers and roots. This feeding habit often leads to uneven wear and tear or broken tips. Warthogs may be ugly-looking animals to some hunters but irresistible to others. This water-dependent species requires high-quality food and is often found grazing on the green patches near rivers or on floodplains and newly burnt sprouting grass. They occur throughout the low-lying areas, especially around the more well-known national parks in the northern, southern and western areas of the country. Warthogs love a good mud bath and can be ambushed at a watering hole or wallow. Bowhunters can build a temporary blind over such a mud wallow, from which they will be able to hunt one of these pigs quite successfully. Besides their trophy value, many hunters reckon a young Warthogs meat is one of Africa’s best tasting venison meats. Warthogs are classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN and no special hunting permits are required. However, Warthog trophies exported to the USA need to comply with the USDA trophy import regulations.
