When to hunt Roan?
Roan may be hunted all year round In South Africa. In Namibia, hunting is closed in January and February, and in Zambia the season runs from May until the end of November. The best months for hunting Roan are the dry winter/autumn months (July-October), especially when water availability is limited as these animals tend to drink in the late afternoon. In some ways, this is a shy species avoiding other herbivores and predators in sparsely wooded medium to tall grasslands.

Hunting methods
Due to its habits of avoiding other species it makes for slightly easier hunting as there is less of a chance of being busted during a walk and stalk by other species sharing the same habitat. What does make things tough is the length of the long grass often in flat areas where they prefer to feed. Although great cover for a stalk it can make shooting difficult when trying to find a shooting lane through this tall grass without exposing yourself. In the late afternoon they may be found resting up near water after taking a drink.
Why hunt Roan?
With their horse-like build, Roan are one of the largest species of antelope in Africa, second only to Eland and a large Kudu bull. These animals are usually hunted after you have done a number of trips to Africa. They make a marvelous addition to a trophy collection and make stunning pedestal mounts when mounted with their close cousin, Sable Antelope. Shoulder mounts and European skull mounts are also very popular.
