Successful Macnab Challenge

The trip immediately started with a catered pickup from the Johannesburg airport, followed by a relaxing drive to a reserve containing breathtaking animals. To say the Big 5 would be an understatement. Following the conclusion, my arrival at the lodge included a welcoming owner, operator, PH, and chef who began explaining the festivities planned for the hunt in the morning. The bonfire, dinner and dessert were delicious (including Kudu game meat). The lodge included my own private kitchen, living room, and clean bedroom. The morning started with a rifle warmup session for acclimating to the top-of-the-line equipment provided and the hunt began. The reserve size was expansive, with 4-wheel transportation everywhere to prevent becoming tired throughout the long and fun day ahead!
The macnab challenge included a Guineafowl, Impala, and Bass in the agenda. Guineafowl run quickly and aren’t the largest birds, but the PH and operator ensured we found a suitable location with Guineafowl for action, crossing the Guineafowl off my list.
The impala hunting was amazing. Many bucks and herds running and grazing across the land. It was a challenging time throughout the midday as the heat kicked in. We paused for a fantastic brunch ant the lodge, and fished for several hours in a local lake then private Eco-friendly (owned by Rust De Winters) resort that had large mouth bass swimming in the river alongside. An exhilarating catch was in-store and resulted in checking the bass off my list.
The owner mentioned that transitioning to a blesbok instead of an impala was an option as the day progressed for more exciting options! Lo and behold, my PH identified a grazing heaven with Blesbok. My operator advised me which animals were fair game, and we setup in the truck. Despite the brush, a visible shot was apparent which concluded the day. We celebrated with another sunset safari to see giraffes and zebras, followed by another excellent meal.
I cannot wait to come back, as this was an experience I will NEVER forget. Thank you, Rust De Winters!

Fantastic Pheasant Hunt with Excellent Lodging and Hospitality

We had a fantastic time on our pheasant and sharptail hunt! The lodging and property was great, very comfortable for our group and fantastic for our dogs.
Ed was exceptionally friendly and helpful, and he shared some great tips that really helped us locate birds across the property. We saw lots of birds and ended up with a great harvest of both sharptails and pheasants. Everything lived up to expectations, and we would definitely do this hunt again. Highly recommended!
Keep in mind that the location is remote, and the nearest grocery store is a ways away, which isn't a bad thing for a hunting trip, but it's definitely something you'll want to plan ahead for regarding food and supplies.

I am a hands on hunter and this made this the perfect hunt for me. The guides were there to make certain I got a good bull and help me on all the items I would have had difficulty myself. They had access to the land, helped find and identify good animals, knew the countryside, caped out the animals much better then I could have done and then helped pack out! Our whole group tagged out on good mature animals, 100% success only because of these guys help!
I still got to help cut and haul meat, pack out hides, antlers.
Very nice hunting style camp without all the glamorous accommodations some might want. I prefer this more rustic style of a camp that still had some comforts to assist with hard days of hunting. (kerosene heater, mattress in a shelter out of the wind, etc.) Don't expect to eat like a king. Cereal in the mornings, you make your sandwiches for lunch and then they make some awesome, simple stews for supper out of the animals you harvest.
Plan on walking for miles, packing meat and cold weather. Don't worry about getting too cold though because we kept moving a lot! I am from Wyoming and am used to some cold so I took four layers and most of the time I only had on two.
The sleeping quarters got warmed up before bed and then cooled as the night progressed so I enjoyed my zero degree bag (Fahrenheit).
And then of course the hostel in town where Erik is willing to let you stay before and after your hunt is a very comfortable stay.
Pooping over a cold rock was probably the worst part of the hunt, but part of the experience! Ya gotta try it at least once in your life!
I wish for myself that I would have done a bit more exercising with my pack on before I went so I was better conditioned for that kind of strain and that I could shoot without getting buck fever! That being said I am glad I still get that excited about harvesting an animal when the time comes.

Awesome Arizona Bear Hunt – Tagged Out Early!

Had an awesome experience on our 5-day Arizona bear hunt! Our group of three all tagged out early on some great bears, and one of us even harvested a mountain lion. The guides worked hard, knew the country extremely well, and had some outstanding dogs that made for an exciting and successful hunt. Great company, a fun camp atmosphere, and plenty of memories made. For the price, it was an excellent hunt and I’d absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for a true spot-and-hound hunting experience in Arizona!
Nothing major to complain about. It’s a true backcountry-style hunting camp with tents and basic accommodations, so don’t expect luxury. That was part of the experience for us, and everything was well worth the price.

Words alone can not explain how extravagant and extraordinary this place is… from the land to the animals and even the people my girlfriend and I have met from day one to the very last.
The acreage is just astounding and beautiful, and the animals we saw were so beautiful and majestic I took in everything I possibly could during my stay, and this is a place I would love to return to.
The people that have created this beautiful paradise for others to enjoy are by far some of the most kind and heartfelt people I have met in a long time and reminded me all the way down to the heart and soul, what southern hospitality is like, and brought back my childhood of living in the south. I would put this place and people at the top of my list of places to book with. Thank you Circle M Lodge for the amazing experience and time shared I plan to see you again next year!

The guides were extremely knowledgeable and kind. The cabins were cozy and the hunt was fantastic. Food was incredible! We ate a variety of meals and never went hungry.

Each of the 3 hunting groups had an opportunity to shoot a bull moose. After I shot my moose, we FULLY butchered it on site. That includes grinding and packaging all meat to leave the work very minimal when getting back home. Meals were incredible! I expected cheap meals being way out in the bush but instead we received meals you would expect from a white table cloth restaurant!

Oliver is an extremely professional, hard working and knowledgeable guide. I enjoyed every minute of the hunt! The area I was hunting had beautiful scenery and a lot of animals. Hunting with Alberta Wild was my first ever guided hunt experience.
The owners (Rick & Derek) and their guides worked really hard for our group during the week long hunt.
Unfortunately none of us tagged elk but I got close. We got shafted by the weather most of the week with very high winds which made calling for bulls almost impossible. This was not the guides fault as nobody can control the weather.
This is a rugged hunt and your success and enjoyment will rely on your physical fitness. I hiked 87.9km total over the seven days. This was up and down rugged ridges and through steep drainages. Just know what you’re getting yourself into. The guys won’t put you in a position where you could get hurt or can’t physically get in/out somewhere due to poor physical fitness, and they pay close attention to how their clients are handling it. They can also take you to more open cut blocks which are easier to access. I got myself ready for this trip by working out and walking with a weighted pack for a number of months before the trip.
The accommodations were excellent. Our group of hunters was in a large canvas wall tent with a stove and very comfortable cots.
I ate like a king all week. I’d get up in the morning, eat breakfast, hunt all morning, come back to camp and eat to my hearts content for lunch. Then I’d nap, and hunt again for the evening. Once we got back, supper was always great. They have numerous snacks on standby when it’s not meal time and numerous choices for non-alcoholic drinks. You definitely won’t go hungry on this hunt.
The hunting was tough but I enjoyed myself and learned a lot. On day five we hiked in close to a bull elk and his cows. The bull bugled multiple times at my guide who continued to call back at him. Eventually the bull stepped into partial view at ~120 yards and I had an opportunity for a good shot, but we had to confirm he was of legal size. I got to watch the bull destroy a tree with his antlers in anger that we were so close to his cows. By the time we could confirm he was of legal size to shoot (legal size is six points on one antler), the bull winded us and had moved into dense brush again, disappearing like a ghost.
On day seven we got onto a bull early. We chased this bull for two hours through some extremely steep drainages. We got caught unexpectedly as the bull came back towards us looking for a fight. He was within 30 yards on the ridge above us. The bull made some of the loudest vocalizations I’ve ever heard an animal make. Loud barks and bugles echoed through the drainage around us. He caught our wind and disappeared over the next ridge. I never got a shot, but it was an incredible experience.
If you’re doing the rifle hunt you should be ready for shots as close as 30 yards if you’re hunting down in the thick brush. If you’re up in some of the open cut blocks you could expect a shot up to 400 yards. The short of it is, be ready and proficient enough for close/long shots. Shooting sticks don’t really work here so be ready for free-hand/bracing against a tree in odd positions to make a shot.
If you’re looking for an adventure then look no further than these guys.
Their prices seem to have gone up since my trip, which is unfortunate and will price a lot of guys out, but I get that everyone has bills to pay.
