When people think about deer hunting in Texas, they mostly think about game ranches. Those who set their sights on a trophy with an impressive score will find many options to choose from. For those who are only interested in filling the freezer, most game ranches offer affordable hunts, that go by the name of cull, management, or doe hunts. These hunts may also be great options for those who are only beginning to explore hunting as adults. However, Texas also has a great population of free-ranging wild deer. Bag limits vary by county, however, on most of the state a hunter can harvest up to five deer (only one of those, however, can be a buck with the spread of more than 13”) a season. ‘Game ranch’ does not equal ‘high fence’ either. While on some game ranches deer hunting is done from permanent stands positioned over feeders, others offer more challenging hunting options, including spot-and-stalk.
